21 August 2007 - Residents from the towns of Dante and Wagner in South Dakota, USA have been battered with record size hail.
One hailstone was so big it left an impression on the ground larger than a football. National Weather Service officials in the USA are currently checking to verify the new world record, claimed to be seven and a quarter inches in diameter. The current world record for the largest reported hailstone of seven inches, was set four years ago at Aurora, Nebraska, USA. Doreen Krcil, a resident in Wagner, South Dakota, USA who spoke to CLOUD news said "Hail smashed 6 windows in our house and lots of farm machinery outside. The Noise was deafening like hundreds of cricket balls being thrown against house wall at once"

"Glad to say that we are slowly getting our farm put back together. Have most of the windows replaced, the house re-shingled and one of the six sheds re-tinned. Most of the other things will have to wait until after harvest or next spring. The damage to our farm buildings, machinery and house were over $100,000.00. Luckily that will be replaced with insurance less our deductible of course. We figure we will also have about a $75,000.00 crop loss which we will not recover. We have multi-peril insurance on the crops, but not straight hail insurance. In case you are unfamiliar with multi-peril crop insurance, it will only pay you to what your guarantee is. Your guarantee is figured on an average production over the past several years. The past several years have been very dry and as a result the production is down. This year would have been one of the better corn and best soybean crops we have raised in the 23 years we have been married. It is also the only time we have ever had a hail claim in that same amount of time.
Needless to say I hope this is a record that nobody breaks - the damage it does is devastating and overwhelming" CLOUD wishes Doreen and her family all the very best in their recovery. Last update : 10-10-2007 14:46
