Moon and Mars conjunction Sat 19 Jan 2008 viewed from UK.

Moon and Mars conjunction On Saturday evening the waxing gibbous Moon was only 1 degree from planet Mars which made for a spectacular conjunction.

The weather for astronomical work from the UK on Saturday night was very poor indeed with the majority of observers missing the conjunction. The sky was covered in fast moving layer of cloud making photography almost impossible. All was not lost however, as CLOUD photographer Mark Humpage managed to capture occasional glimpses between the fast moving cloud cover. Mark was at home in Sth Leics and this image was taken 16 mins before closest approach. This was a very good capture with a perfectly exposed waxing gibbous Moon with planet Mars to the moon's south west.

Mark's Olympus E3 dslr and huge 250mm lens enabled the resulting image to be captured so clearly.
